Painting

Sera Holland (b. 1981, Johannesburg) is an artist based in Cape Town. She studied graphic design prior to moving to Dublin, and later returned home to start and run her own textile design business before transitioning into painting and ceramics full time. Sera has participated in various exhibitions with galleries across South Africa and abroad.

Sera’s paintings are characterised by a tactile appeal and fearless use of colour. Her engagement with paint is deliberate and considered. Drawing on a longstanding interest in colour and material, as well as her experience in design, textiles and ceramics, she approaches painting as both a sensory and investigative process. Her work is concerned with the physical demands of oil paint and an ongoing exploration of how sensory experience influences perception. At its core, Sera’s practice examines how order and chaos can coexist within a single surface, and what might emerge when emotion, instinct, and material curiosity take the lead. Her paintings develop slowly layer by layer, as she tests the limits of paint as both a physical substance and a visual language.
